I see lots of Competent Person service offerings across and plethora of websites, and just wondered if firms actually take these services up. Really, what quality professional service can be provided for £350, (and I've seen few for less!)?

Companies/organisations are required to appoint somebody to advise on H&S matters.

For such a small fee, its probably just a telephone advice service - keep someone on a retainer, call them on the phone if advice is required.

I'm clear on what it is, but do many firms buy it?

Yes, but not usually as a stand alone service.

In my experience, as part of a consultancy services package e.g. write a safety policy, risk assessment report/service, agreed number of site visits.

In which case the overall fees are much more than £350

The phone service is a bit of a 'loss leader' / freebie - as many clients never call.

Forgot to say, when I was involved with this kind of stuff 10-15yrs ago the internet was obviously much less common.

I would think the service isn't required as much these days as the answers to common h&s questions are easy to find on the internet i.e. HSE website etc.

I doubt if there is much of a living to be made, if you were thinking of being just a telephone adviser, with a range of clients etc.

I've encountered two medium sized firms that did this for a time instead of in-house safety advice, so I don't think it can be that uncommon - although I'd expect it to be more common in smaller firms for whom it might actually make sense.

This service is common in the live events / exhibition and conference industry currently where an organiser has to met the requirements of the venue.

Comments like "what quality professional service can be provided for £350" seem to me to not understand what it is like being a consultant and help no one. Why the constant sniping at consultants? At the end of the day it is a highly competitive world out there. Also, for £350, you get £350 worth of competent advice. This may be enough or not enough depending on your risks. You want more, you pay more.
