A little advice if you would..... We have a rep who would normally work from home, on the road and at farms and venues within his sector. He has recently had a seizure and a feinting incident (separate). It has gone down as an unknown seizure for now, but he has an automatic 6 month driving ban. Fairly standard protocol so far. We have had him assessed by our Occupational health team and they are happy for him to work, attend meetings and the like as long as he doesn't drive, manages his sleep and eating patters well and has a driver when travelling is required. I think it would be prudent for the driver to have some form of epilepsy awareness/management training to assist if the worst case scenario develops and the rep has another seizure. Has any body had any experience of such a situation and how did you deal with it? Any advice will be well received.
Thanks in advance, Pete.

I presume that the driver knows the reason why they are driving their colleague around?
I think it would be in both their best interests for the driver to have had first aid training and also an understanding of signs of seizures and what to do in their event.
The employee should be comfortable with this as it is for their protection. As you have an OH team - presumably they could support with some info. on seizures for the driver?

Hi Nicola,
Yes the driver has been brought in solely for this purpose and as it happens, has had first hand experience as a family member is epileptic. That's purely by chance and was no part of out selection process.
The rep has been updated on all of the developments and has been active in some of the decisions that have been made. I think some first aid training would be a good idea, it might be that it could focus on the epilepsy a little more if he raises the matter to the instructor.
I will contact our OH and see what they have to offer...
Many thanks,
Pete
