The company I work for is a student accommodation provider and has H&S accreditation of its systems & processes to HSG65/BS8800, externally audited. The board wish to market the safety element of the company's properties to attract more students into residence. I am tasked with finding out what certified standards are well known, outside of the H&S community, that parents & students will recognise & attract them. I know that OHSAS18001 is becoming more widely known but not outside of our environment. Anyone got any ideas?

How about the British Safety Council 5 star awards? The British Safety Council will at least sound familiar to non H&S pratitioners regardless of what anyone thinks of the merits of those awards vs 18001 or others.

I think this is a nonsense exercise you're being set. Do they really think that the general public understand any of these 'awards'. As an exercise I have just quickly asked a couple of the admin staff near me and they basically replied with "as if anyone cares about that".

Realistically, to the general public, it will be the award that looks and sounds like the best/flashiest, as it has been put to you, its a marketing exercise. I would agree with DavidGault and say that the British Safety Council's award would be easily understood as being a good award with the whole '5 star' aspect of the award being quite clear in what it is saying.
