Does anyone have an opinion on how long the Managing Safely training should be valid for? I want to write a policy for my company that refreshers are needed every X years.....my suggestion is 5 but what do other members think? Thanks Steve

Hi Jackson This topic was discussed a few days ago but not in this context. My suggestion would be to build a refresher programme based upon the MS programme but rather than as a specific yearly period I would consider twice a year @ no more than 1 day and use critical changes to referenced legislation and important Case Studies. A change of post would also trigger a "refresher" to cater for any new skills/competence/knowledge required. For instance; at the end of 2013 I would have provided an update on RIDDOR, MHSW, and ACoPs baed upon what's in the MS syllabus. That way the "refresher" will always be new & different rather than the same tedious [and boring] repeats that everyone already knows. Hope that helps Frank Hallett

Thanks Frank - my issue is I have recently joined my company with HSQE responsibility and found many people who did the course a few years ago with the mindset that they've ticked that box and no longer need CPD (they aren't HSE professionals). I need to bring them up to date as a "job lot" before introducing more regular safety awareness topics. Also, the staff are nationwide so not easy to bring everyone together for a regular training session - has to be e-learning or similar Steve

OK Jackson - I understand. How you proceed will depend on a range of variables; there a couple of good e-learning programmes that you could use to get your managers up-to-scratch and then build on that for the future. Frank Hallett

IOSH offer a refresher course for the MS as long as the original date is within 3 years, added bonus is that it is a one day refresh, rather than a full 4 day course. The company I work for offer this, as others must do, PM me for more info if needed. Mike
