I'm currently investgating a fire that started in an air compressor. I am unable to find any paper trail for the purchase or installation of the compressor, installed 5 months ago. What are the potential breaches?
Many thanks in advance.

What do you mean by 'breaches'? If you are at the investigation stage, you should be finding out what happened and why, not considering blame (i.e. vs either internal or external requirements) at this stage.
If there's no paper trail, you'll need to interview those involved to establish the facts (which you would probably need to do anyway to supplement any paperwork). If the paperwork is lost, then those interviews should help you establish how to source replacements and investigate about possibly missing installation or maintenance checks, that may have led to the fire?

I'm presuming that you're looking for the evidence as part of the investigation to determine whether the kit was actually properly selected, acquired, installed, maintained and used baal?
I'm also presuming that your fire and compressor are within the UK - if not, my comments are probably irrelevant.
I don't wish to be judgemental or disrepectful here; but I am more than a little concerned that you have to ask the question as posed if you're the one conducting the investigation.
I would start by going through:-
Purchasing and other accounts to determine where the compressor actually came from;
Any Marks, Signs or other info on the kit that indicates the manufacturer of the kit;
Documentation relating to whether it had a CE Mark and whether it was genuine;
Other internal records that indicate who fitted it;
PUWER - for responsible fitting and general maintenance;
Pressure Systems Regs [to determine legality of kit being on the market];
Pressure Systems Safety Regs - especially for whether there is a Written Scheme of Examination and what it includes.
I'm sure that others will provide a wealth of info for you to sift through.
