Good morning,
If one indeed on exists – could somebody kindly guide me to a document that provides guidance / information on the number of smoke detectors that are required considering the following ( low risk environment commercial and life safety only):-
- Use of room
- Size of room
Award of approved docs and such but something like a simple guide – there are a couple out there for domestic premises but I can find low risk commercial,
Thanks if anyone can help?

BS5839 should cover your issues
Or 112 square metres per device

Hi DP
What does your FRA say about smoke detector provision?
A blanket approach to even "low risk commercial" may not be adequate or appropriate - there are always areas where the detection cover is inadequeste or over-provided as square metreage by itself will only work for large open areas.
Also, Standards of this type are only advisory, not definitive.

Hi Frank
The FRA process I have inherited has taken a blanket approach and I have detection everywhere and in some cases unnecessary e.g. toilets / unoccupied sterile void space etc. – I’m trying to build a new spec going forward, to assist only - not to make the final decision – existing properties have been completed now so that’s history.
Completely understand your comments on FRA and each case merit – this will remain premises-by-premises – all properties are new and will go before Building Control but they are not to tell me we’ve over egged are they only under? Just looking for a simple tool to help get it right 1st time.
I have a meeting with building Controls Officer next week I’m just doing my prep. This will really help too.

i'm a little confused here DP!
Could I just confirm that you're referring to a number of existing and proposed units intended for low-hazard commercial use? There is a presumption in there that the units are essentially single level [possibly mezzanine floor inside each] and no other occupancy superimposed?
Incidentally, unoccupied spaces very often don't remain unoccupied or sterile once the tenant/occupier moves in - you may wish to consider that as well.
Do you have a copy of the Govt doc - Fire Safety Risk Assessment - ISBN-13: 978 1 85112 816 7 or ISBN-10: 1 85112 816 6
Originally available via the DCLG website: www.firesafetyguides.communities.gov.uk

Hope that helps

Frank – got everything I need from BS9999 – drop me a pm with you mobi and I’ll bell to explain I’ll be typing all day otherwise. Just spoke with two old mates both ex prosecutors for fire services – they have boxed me off.
Thanks for your help its appreciated, I’d be happy to discuss in more detail to throw some light on it and end your confusion.

Good to hear that you're sorted DP.
I didn't mention BS9999 as I thought that your comment "approved docs and such" included that.
