I have just had a H&S questionnaire from a customer that asks:-

What H&S legislation, Approved Codes of Practice, HSE guidance and industry guidance applies to the work you do.

Are they really asking to list everything out that possibly an organisation may come under? Why?. Do others ask this of their suppliers / sub contractors / service providers?

Do you all maintain a list of everything?

I don’t actually maintain a list, so not sure how to answer. There is no main H&S legislation just the same as for everyone, HASAWA, Management Regs, RIDDOR etc, but then we come under everything from Legionella control to LOLER, to Working at height To….. An almost unimaginable list (but sadly I can imagine it and don’t want to produce it).

Your thoughts

We had to compile lists of applicable H&S and Environmental legislation for our external auditors as part of our 18001 and 14001 accreditataion. Admittedly, it was a pain the first time that we did it but now requires little maintenance.

Chris

Totally agree. I think the people who ask these questions really have very little idea of the scope and variety of workplace health and safety and the amount information they are asking for.

To answer your question no I do not maintain a list.

Same as PH2 here.

I have 3 very detailed lists - 3 different jurisdictions with different legislation. 18001 requires you to understand your work (activities), ID risks and then look to see what legislation applies. Later in the process the standard asks how you confirm compliance with same.

If you want a UK based register PM with your email and I will send it on.

Thanks all

We do have 14001, but not 18001, so we have an environmental list, but not H&S.

However when you created the lists was it just Legislation or did you include ACOP's, Guidance and industry guidance. How do you refer to HSE's uncontrolled (ie no rev number or date) web site info.

Just down load the HSE book catalogue as a PDF and send them that!

http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/hsebooks-catalogue.pdf

That should shut them up!

Like your style Brian. I did wonder if I could create a computer document which when compressed / zipped was ok to email, but once un zipped would bring any self respecting server to it knees.

Well, I have just wasted a good chunk of Sunday producing a list, containing 2 Acts, 32 regulations, 41 HSG's and 27 from the Legal list.

I suspect they will not read it. It has proved nothing.

What a waste of time and effort. I so wish that charges to customers could clearly include the waste of time questionnaires and PQQ's etc cause. Except in this instance it is free as it is my day off.
