Can anyone give me a heads up with regards to fire / smoke dampers please ?

I know the old building regs used to state something along the lines of ductwork
systems serving more than one part of a sub-divided escape route, should have a fire
damper provided where the duct work enters each section of the escape route operated by a smoke
detector or suitable fire detection system. The fire dampers should close when smoke is detected.

I'm looking at an office block with zero schematics for the trunking runs and wanted to know if these were still appropriate?

Whats the latest advice?

Many thanks in advance for all your assistance kind people

Hi Nimble - may I put your question in a slightly different way?

Would you really consider it acceptable that smoke [and possibly fire] from one space could permeate unchecked through a building and obscure or cut-off the Means of Escape routes because you haven't provided Dampers?

You don't need regulations to decide if you need to fire stop.

It is your fire risk assessment and if I read you right you need to prevent a fire travelling between compartments.

If you have sprinklers you can install heads inside the ducting, that may allow you to avoid fire dampers?

Hi Frank; Mr 101;
my apologies I was being slightly unclear I'm putting forward recommendations that dampers need to be fitted as I'm far from happy with the situation.

However I'm aware that senior managemetn is going to want the exact clauses / wording specifying the need

Kind regards

Nim

OK Nimble - ask them how they would like to be those trapped?

To my knowledge, there is no explict and specific mention of your topic in legislation.

My approach would be to identify that failure to prevent the spread of smoke and fire is a direct contravention of the FSO [I presume that you're in England or Wales?]. See especially Article 4(1) of the FSO.

I would also obtain a copy of BR App Doc B and also BS9999 and quote chapter and verse from these as they does consider this topic in some detail.

I would also clearly identify what I percieved as the essential actions and remedial measures in writing, together with my reasons for proposing them in my FRA report to your senior management.

If they then decide to do something else, it will be their privelige to respond to any subsequent enforcement.

The property insurers may have a view as it is in their interests for you not to have a fire that spreads throughout the building.
