Fire doors and surrounds - specialist advice pls
Rank: Forum user
|
Hello, In relation to a Georgian-era heritage building in the Republic of Ireland, we are proposing to use intumescent paint over existing internal doors (including going over existing door paint, i.e not stripping the doors); also to fit smoke seals and to fit upgraded hinges.
Considering the door surrounds are fitted to solid brick internal walls, should these surrounds also be treated with intumescent or other fire resistant paint?
Advice or signposts gratefully received!
thanks, Sheila

Hi Shelia, If using the intumescent paint the frames should be included. Covering over previous paint is not ideal and you would need to know what type of paint was previously used. Generally it is three coats and will need to be certified by an engineer or by the supplier company and the certificate submitted as part of the fire safety certificate application. You might want to check with a fire safety engineer as the doors may already offer 30 minutes protection and need minimal work. Georgian houses in Dublin were originally fitted with solid oak doors and these should easily achieve 30 minutes. Kevin

Hi Kevin,
This is very helpful, thank you. We are just awaiting contact from a heritage company also in case there are other considerations too. Thanks again, much appreciated. Sheila
