I have been told that " There is a requirement for external metal structures (such as fire escape stairs for example) to be inspected for structural soundness every 5 years"
Anyone else aware of this, or where it may come from
Thanks
Bill

Not that I am aware of - but happy to admit that I don't know everything!

Reg 5 of the workplace Regs requires that the workplace is maintained and the associated Guidance refers to BS8210:1986 Guide to building maintenance management (Updated in 2012?) I think the five yearly requirement may come from this 1986 standard. I don’t know what the current standard stipulates.

One of our tenant's buildings (a hotel) was subject to Fire Service enforcement - means of escape - because the external staircase had not been inspected. A 5-yearly regime was deemed acceptable.
