Hi all

Looking for legislation on garage mechanics and whether it is manadatory that they are suitably qualified or just have relevant experience.

Thanks in advance

No, there is no legislation that says a garage mechanic has to have any specific qualifications.

Pretty scary when you think of the consequences of getting the job wrong.

Piece of string question again Baal. What defines competence?

A collage certificate or years of experience.

I would imagine that at interview stage for a position this would have been made clear.

With regards you question certain elements of being a mechanic requires mandated competence - to think of one is the MOT test. There may be others.

Yes there are a number of entry routes to becoming a qualified technician but the point is, you don't actually have to be qualified to be one.

Even those who choose to become MOT testers only have to have 4 years "experience", have another MOT tester vouch for them and pass a simple VOSA multiple choice test followed by a 2 day course. I did a 4 year apprenticeship as a mechanic and I doubt I had the skills when I finished to properly assess the roadworthiness of a car. In saying that, I actually topped my class every year.
