Quick Query Can we train a mobile crane driver(Joe) as AP ,let the crane driver Joe complete all of the pre-lift duties as AP then transfer his duties to a lift supervisor and then Joe completes the lift as a crane driver. Is this possible or is their a conflict of interest Thanks

Boyblue Login to the CPA web Site go onto crane interest groups and you will find plenty of info there that will help. Sorry there are to many variables to make it a quick reply without knowing the background details. Ta Alex

In short no he can't, as only the duties can be transferred and not the responsibilities there is a real conflict of interest. This is mentioned within bs 7121 and the CPA guidance. Good luck anyway.

In the UK (noting you are in ROI, where the rules tend to be slightly more prescriptive...) I would be more concerned with the absence of a competent 'check' if one person is doing everything. It may be ok for routine, standard lifts, but for out-of-the ordinary unusual lifts, I would always want to see at least two people involved who should be able to spot if the other makes a serious error - and put it right. So an Authorised Person preparing a lift plan - would have his work checked by the crane driver. Even this only works if the driver feels able to challenge... Where the 'master/servant' relationship is to entrenched and hierarchical, then effectively you only have one person 'doing it' anyway....
