I looked at these a few years ago but technology seems to have moved on with apps for smart phones - I am just wondering if any fellow member has adopted these or something similar and how effective they have found them. I am really looking for replies from someone with direct and practical experience of these Many Thanks

Hi Phil, I issued something called a "Man Down" alarm to our lone warehouse operative a couple of years ago. It was a small belt clipped black black box that would screech quite loudly following about 5 mins of no movement. It seemed to work well and was generally unobtrusive unless activated. In situations where the warehouse guy was inactive but not in distress, ie, sitting at his desk, the box would tick loudly for 30 secons or so prior to screeching. He simply had to tap the box to reset the 5 min time limit. Seems to be a effective low cost soloution in that situation. Andy

Have a look at Connexion2 and there Identicom system. They do name badge systems, Apps for Iphones and Ipads etc. Basic package is about £21.95 for each device for 12 months, Identicom mobile is £12.95 per month, these do reduce in cost/proce over longer periods. They work off GPRS so should get coverage over most of the country. I have contact info if required for a Key Account Manager.

We have been using a Skyguard system (to which Clegg refers above) for some years and am generally very happy with the product and service. At the time, they were the only company that I could find that would meet all of the criteria that I required: Shareability - can be shared among an 'infinite' number of users; this is handy when you have lots of people who may have a need for such an alarm on an occasional basis. Allows for best use of resources and helps control costs Easy to manage - user friendly online interface. Easy to update details, assign and deassign units, reporting etc. Roaming sim - as most people we have areas where some networks work and others don't. The roaming sim may not be 'foolproof' but it does allow us to try and provide the best coverage 'Man down' feature - this can be turned on/off and the sensitivity adjusted Skyguard products are also available as a download for mobiles. I am sure other systems have similar features.

Depends what you want. We are looking and evaluating a number of systems for lone working off site. So far the tests have gone very well. The important thing is that the technology only is part of the solution, it’s what happens after the alarm has been raised that is key to making this work. So questions like: who is the company’s responder and what do they do. Remember the police will not come out unless there is evidence that a person is in immediate danger( eg they have been missing for at least 24 hours) so the initial response needs to be in-house. If you are going to invest in this technology you need to think about the complete package
