To cut a long story short, I have just been asked by a member of the village drama club if the fact that the cricket club changing room might have asbestos ceiling tiles is a problem because they want to knock it through.
I have told them to "hold their horses" and I will go and look at the changing rooms & swot up on asbestos. Aside from directing them to the HSE website does anyone know of any advice or assistance for community groups on tackling issues like this? I know they don't have a lot of funds, one of my concerns is the enthusiatic voluntary caretakers who take a "robust" approach to safety. If they think this is going to be costly or protracted someone might just "accidentally" remove it.

Best thing to do is to get it tested. Once you know what your dealing with you can take it from there. Won't cost much to get it tested.

Forgot to mention that the removal of the ceiling tiles will probably need a licenced contractor to remove it.

Some work like this tends to be classed as Notifiable non licensed work, fact sheet A2 on the HSE website gives information but relates to the removal of screwed in asbestos insulating boards (AIB) / ceiling tiles.
Would recommened having a look at the sheet and perhaps get someone to attend an Asbestos Awareness Course or similar.
It may be best to leave them in place as if undamaged then perfectly safe as no fibres will have been released. If damage has occured then best to remove. Hope this helps a little.

There is specific reference to managing asbestos and it might prove useful to help convince those you are advising this is a valid concern that needs a bit of advance investigation?

I would first of all recommend that a sample is taken by a trained competent person and sent to a UKAS laboratory to determine whether the ceiling tiles do contain asbestos.
Also it is a legal requirement under regulation 4 of the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 that the owner of any none domestic premises must undertake an asbestos management plan of their building detailing where the asbestos is what type of asbestos is present and what condition and must revisit it annually this information must be passed on to all those who require it i.e. contractors carrying out work on your premises
In the event of the sample being returned as positive for containing asbestos and you then decide that they require removal due to the condition the removal work will need to be carried out by an asbestos HSE licensed contractor as I am assuming that they are asbestos insulation boards which would be a licensed asbestos product due to the potential fibre release when disturbed along with the type of asbestos fibre present
