Hi all
We have a large number of staff who need to use tablet PC's as an intrinsic part of their role. These tablets are predominantly hand held throughout use (as there is rarely any flat, hard surface to place them on).
We are now starting to have a number of issues where users are reporting health issues such as tennis elbow/ golfer's elbow.
We have assessed the task and have so far come up with varying suggestions - such as taking regular breaks; completing stretching exercises; etc.; etc; to name but two.
However, we are still having problems. Is there anyone out there that may have encountered similar issues that could provide any further advice, guidance? Presently I am stumped.
Thanks in advance
Nick

I haven't come across this, those who use tablets here don't use them all day (at the moment) and usually can rest on a desk or table regularly. Have you thought about the size and weight and looked at smaller ones? I would also look at the activities that they are completing - in my experience it is often the case that the activities could be changed to reduce use or done when the risks are less, such as when sitting, using a computer, using docked in keyboards etc.

The main problem that I have is that it is not possible for users to sit at a desk, etc., to use the tablets - they are generally using them to carry out their roles within empty premises.

Well then you have to go back to basics- remember it’s not just the DSE requirements we also have a general duty of care, which means you are going to have to look at risk assessment and the controls which derive from that.
So first question:
1. Do they absolutely need to use this particular type of gizmo and there are no suitable alternatives to this eg could they record the information using some sort of voice recorder or even some sort of even recognition software?
2. If not, then look at the tablets you are using; can you use a smaller one eg one that rest conformably in one hand: it might not have all of the features of the bigger tablet but if it’s more comfortable to use, think about that.
3. If they are stuck with that tablet model, you are going to have to think about encouraging the employees to take breaks etc ( which might be tricky as they work alone and pace themselves) it is possible to incorporate apps that will force them to take a break every 30 minutes or so.
4. Finally and as a last resort maybe look at some sort of arm support- but I would not like that option as it gives a false sense of security and might end up disguising real musculosketal damage.

Some of my clients use tablets and I have to say the engineers love them, probably because it means they no longer have to come back to the office to use a laptop/pc after being on site to complete their paperwork. The information is either emailed direct from the tablet to the office or uploaded to Drop Box (or similar).
I've not had any health complaints regarding the use of the tablets as yet, although they are fairly light and worn around the neck by a strap. We had to trial several different ones to get one that fitted the bill in terms of usability and capability (and this was done with the engineers so they were happy with the product they were being asked to use). The tablets are used for relatively short durations such as completing pre-start briefings, red line drawings on surveys, taking photos etc. so they are not using them all the time which means they have a regular breaks from use.
Have you asked the users for their feedback on what the problems are and if they have any ideas on what could be done to improve the tablets or a change in process maybe?
Regards, Jayne

If you use Blackberry's, they do a "reader pen" you use to write out the form that then links wi-fi to the phone to transmit the written word off a form back to wherever. The "paperwork" is completed on site in hard copy and a soft copy is transmitted back on job completion. Head office know when the job is complete etc.
Pretty easy and not heavy.
