hello, I was wondering what control measures people have when it comes to Dock Loaders. We have 2 in our Warehosue and the height is about 1.26M to floor level. of course we train our people not to open until a truck is attached but that control can very easily be broken. Was wondering if anyone else has had this problem and what engieneering controls you have used to prevent people from falling? Thanks very much Katie

We use extending concertina type barriers which are set back from the edge to physically prevent access, this is then opened when FLT / waggon is in place and the load can be brought forward. But our loading bays are not in constant use so this may be a hassle if yours are in high use? We also use a similar method for our loading bays that are from different levels (1st floor). Also generally guide acces away from the loading baya by walkways etc

You could also look at the Salvo Safe system from Castell. This uses a trapped key system linked to the vehicles "susie" brake line and the door to the loading dock. Basically the door cannot be opened until the vehicle is rendered immobile by detaching the brake line and releasing the key to the door. Prevents unplanned early departures from the dock and only opens up the dock when a vehicle is positioned against it. Two birds with one stone. http://www.salvosafe.com/

We have Salvo on all our doors and it is a very good system, but not cheap! If your bay doors have shoot bolts on them (these can be cheaply fitted) using a lock off pad lock to prevent them being opened with a key control system can be a cheaper option.

Agreed Salvo is not a cheap way of preventing access to the edge of the loading dock. However, it is a cheap system for preventing unplanned early departures from the dock - when compared to the mechanical vehicle restraint systems you can get.

Some good info on the above mentioned system, and others here: http://www.fta.co.uk/_ga..._Loading_dock_safety.pdf Loading Dock Safety Guide by the Freight Transport Association - inconjunction with many of the major haulage firms.
