Morning all,

Can anyone aid me please with regard to Lifting Operations.

We are a sub contractor, working on site with a main contractor. We have been asked to carry out Lifting operations, for which we are hiring in a crawler crane. We have an appointed person in house, who is going to prepare the Lift plan. We have hired in a banksman to carry out the Lifting Duties.

Now my query, as there is much debate, I stated that a Crane Supervisor needs to be on site during lifting operations. Is this correct or am I going mad? And I also said this CS cannot be the crane operator, but could be the banksman IF he holds that category card.

Thanks in advance

With respect, the AP ought to know the requirements of BS7121. He after all, has attended the training and will know who he needs to appoint. The CS does need to be on site and the AP could assume these duties or appoint suitably qualified persons. Part 1, Section 8 details the attributes of personnel and states that the crane operator cannot be a crane supervisor.
