Hi
We need more members at our site EHS commitee (non trade union). Office/ admin building 500 employees..
Need to sell this to our employees to encourage participation..
What would the beneifts (to a typical employee) be of joining a committee?
Have a bit of a list but need a few more postive points..

Why? Is there any real need to have an extended committee in your particular work environment? If the existing EHS arrangements are working well why take up people's time with what is too often a talking shop?
If EHS arrangements are inadequate then a committee will take ages to come to any meaningful conclusions on what to do and then a further age to actually achieve change.
If there is genuine desire to contribute to EHS improvements among the employees then simply letting them know that the committee has vacancies should get results.
Long experience of committees in general has given me a jaundiced view of what they can achieve, although the enthusiasm and drive of individual volunteers, if used well, can make a massive difference to overall performance in EHS management. Simply having a committee because that's the perceived thing to do is too common.

Not knowing how your company operates, the individual attitudes of staff and how the managemnet look at H+S (i.e positive safety culture). It is quite difficult.
Here is a list of possibles.
Enhanced promotion prospects
The enjoyment of knowing that you maybe able to influence change for the better.
Ownership of health and safety within the organistion more likely to develop positive attitudes and behaviours and observe controls.
Develop new skills and knowledge (add another string to your bow)
Oops manager has just walked in back to work now am afraid
Good luck

If you could provide a brief summary of the benefits already on your list, it might help forum users to think of useful additions.
Also, are you seeking to increase the numbers on the committee or replace people who have left it? If it's the latter and involves people who have left for no obvious neutral reason (such as retirement), it might be worth tactfully trying to find out why if you don't already know. If it transpires that they left because they found the committee meetings uninspiring, etc., have a look at previous threads on this forum about improving such meetings. This would help in retaining the new members after they've joined.
If you are seeking to attract extra members (hopefully for good reason/s), try asking the existing members why they are on the committee and then use their positive answers. Better still, consider asking one or two enthusiastic members to help with recruiting newcomers.
It's best to avoid suggesting that committee meetings provide an opportunity for indolent employees to indulge in paid breaks/rests from their normal work! As for using free refreshments as an enticement, don't forget to include chocolate biscuits - it seems that most people find them hard to resist! :-)
