Hi All I'm new to the forum :-) I'm trying to get clarification on something. A relay on a standalone machine was replaced by a safety relay as the e-stop did not work. It didn't change the wiring but I am unsure if this needs to be re CE marked as I am unsure of changing one relay for a safety relay can be classed like for like. Any help would be much appreciated. Lynnette welcome to the forum... It would probably benefit the forum if you described the machine in more detail...that way you are probably going to get a better quality response...

Hi Steve Its an enclosed conveyor system that you manually load parts into, which carries parts to another enclosed part of the machine. Its quite simple piece of equipment and was purchased off the shelf. All documents accompany this piece of equipment. The e-stop failed when checks were being carried out hence why they changed the relay as it latched on, causing the motor to stay to on. Thanks Lynette

Lynette , Welcome The machine would come under PUWER Regs 98, 1.Is access to dangerous parts of the machinery protected? 2.Does operation of stop controls bring the work equipment to a safe condition, in a safe manner 3.Is all stored energy removed where necessary 4.Is there an Emergency stop provided 5.Are the Emergency stops located correctly 6.Do the Emergency stops function correctly 7.Is the Emergency stop circuit hard wired?

So you replaced a faulty relay with another that was not identical but basically the same. The way the machine functions has not changed. The new relay is of a higher spec "safety" than the old. You don't need to re-CE mark the machine.

It might not be that simple. Who selected the "safety relay"? What is the circuit architecture? What standards do the new and old relays meet?

The maintenance technician replaced the safety relay. I wouldn't know the make up of the circuit. The safety relay is Pilz. The circuit was not changed - only the relay. Thanks Lynette
