Hi. We have FLT drivers competent to drive reach trucks but we have just invested in some counterbalance trucks and wish to convert their skills. I'm getting conflicting information from training providers; some providers state that a reach licence will suffice for the driving of a counterbalance (and vice-versa), whereas others are saying that a conversion course will be necessary. Could anyone shed some light on this please - many thanks!

Hi Courtney,
Yes, a conversion course will be necessary although it shouldn't prove too difficult if the truck are of similar capacity and propulsion.

The HSE ACoP for Rider Operated Lift Trucks (L117), para 44 states that:-
Basic training should be given on all the types of lift truck and 44 attachments that operators will or could be required to use in their work. If the operator is subsequently required to operate another type of lift truck, or there is a change of handling attachment, additional, practical conversion training will be required. Employers should also consider the need for conversion training where the truck type does not change, but the size and weight alters significantly.
The HSE guidance on paras 80 to 82 provides more details regarding conversion training.
