Good afternoon, surely we are not the only ones asking us this. We are occupying a 13 floor office building and are wondering about our evacuation times. Obviously there is the thought of 2.5mins to get to safety, I just want to confirm, is this to evacuate the building or to get to a safe place, i.e. a refuge of fireproof stairwell? Where does this time come from? Any thoughts are appreciated.

Download yourself a Fire Risk Assessment Guideline (https://www.gov.uk/government/collections/fire-safety-law-and-guidance-documents-for-business). There are a number of these aimed at specific circumstances but they are almost identical. Evac time is dependant on a number of factors such as the building structure, compartmentation, use of the building, persons within and so on. You may want to consider phase evacuation. again the guideline(s) will advise on this. Good luck

As far as Im aware the evac times listed are provisional and can be extended or reduced depending on the circumstance of the building, risk, size, people etc. Iv always seen the evac times as the time taken to get to a place of ultimate safety away from the building. Its the travel distances that consider the distance to get to a place of reletive safety (protected corridor/stairwell).
