Hi Folks - i need some help in sourcing specialist companies that are competent to carry out a fire risk assessment for a power station located in Runcorn (NW England). There are plenty of firms that offer a service of this nature but most seem to be geared towards commerial properties - offices, shops and the likes.
I would be grateful if anyone could suggest companies that can undertake this sort of work for me and particualrly if you have used them for doing similar work within your own organisation
Many Thanks
Martyn Gilbert (Safety, Compliance & Performance Engineer (CMIOSH) - Rocksavage Power Station)

In my personal experience very few people offering risk assessments [fire or otherwise] offer assessments in other than simple day to day environments even high shool RA's leave a lot to be desired

PM me as I have worked at many places inclusive of power stations [Nuclear & non-Nuclear] inclusive of Rock Savage

No issues doing fire assessments for such types of industrial locations.

I have also worked in power stations (conventional & nuclear) - one just down the road from there.

Also fire assessments for oil refineries/chemical process plant and off shore platforms.

Also DSEAR/ATEX work.

I currently work as a freelance safety engineer in the oil & gas sector.

I suggest you should also fire consequence modelling using DNV PHAST software - which I can offer. A bit less subjective.

Drop me a line.

Forgot to add, if you are not aware

The use of PHAST consequence modelling will give you an indication of the size / distance of thermal contours - the likely distances which may still harm people and may still potentially damage other plant due to the heat radiation from your gas process pipework

Being a gas fired power station, you should be considering such things as jet fires from the gas supply pipes to/around the power station.

It is very difficult to undertake such assessments by a 'manual'/subjective fire assessment, as is often done in normal factories/business premises fire risk assessments.

Also if you store diesel on site, as an alternative, fuel supply - you should also consider pool fires - again PHAST software will do the maths etc.

If you store diesel, you may be a Tier 2 COMAH site?

I have peviously worked at a CHP power station run by one of the 'big 6' energy providers - so familiar with the operation of gas turbines and steam turbines in such applications. I previously worked at Weston Point CHP.

I am a very competent fire risk assessor, so competent in fact that I recognise my limitations.

I wouldn't touch this with a barge pole, much too heavy for me, but good luck in finding the right consultant.

Hi

I have undertaken power station FRA's and recently undertook a compliance review of other Nuclear power sites. I have carried out design reviews of petrochemical sites and have obtained DNV compliance for such sites including Methanol Gas refineries, if you would like some advise on the possible routes forward I am happy to help if needed.

Regards

Darren
