Hi all,

Shipping containers come into our premises packed with boxes of various shapes, sizes and weights. The heights involved are approx. 2.3m which is reaching above head high for the majority of people.

We also build pallets of goods to go out to customers. These pallets are built as high as possible to save on transport costs. Again the pallets could be built above 2m in height.

My question is that building pallets or stripping containers of this description involves alot of over-reaching on behalf of employees. This is operation would happen several times during a person's shift.

I am thinking of introducing a maximum pallet height and possibly steps to reach higher parts of containers but am meeting with fierce resistance by management. Has anyone any ideas on how to resolve the over-reaching issue?

Thanks.

Hi Sinead,
There was a case involving one of the major retailers where by the stacking of shelves above shoulder height led to an injury. Decision of the court was that a platform of some kind should have been provided to reduce the need to lift above shoulder level and that goods supplied for lifting onto shelves should have been provided to the worker at a reasonable height. Dont quote me on the exact details but a good google search might help. I think "Every Little Helps"?
