Hi I passed the NEBOSH General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety in March this year. I am now planning on becoming an Associate Member with IOSH but I have a question. My employer funded my training so I am wondering if they might pay for the membership. Has anybody else approached their employer to fund the membership here or would you recommend that I pay for membership myself? If I fund this myself should I then inform my employer? Many thanks Dave

I paid for my membership myself as I am currently on FTC, I would tell my employer should I gain Associate or Tech status as I'll be wanting this put on my record and on my email signature :-)

My employer pays for my membership and it is part of the benefits of the company.

Being a member of IOSH is a requirement of my role, therefore the organisation pays for my membership subscription. Would I remain a member otherwise? Graham

I openly approached my boss about it, I explained that the benefits were many and the cost was low. I explained that as a H&S manager, it showed a commitment to Health and safety that would be respected. There is a wealth of information to be had throughout the forums and through the meetings, another important point I raised. He was quite happy to pay the small fee. Kind regards,

Always worth discussing with your employer - if you don't ask then you won't get!

My employer routinely pays for membership of chartered bodies. Many of our scientists belong to one or other such body so having membership paid for is not unusual. Different employers with a different understanding of qualifications might argue that it is of no direct benefit to them

I waslucky. All my various employers paid for Membership and suitable training courses, plus Annual Conference each year. I made sure, as part of my annual performance review/goal setting, that Membershiup/Training/Conference were part of what was required of me, and paying for them was agreed by employer[s] Also - remember that anything you do have to pay for is probably tax deductable. Good Luck

I think an employer can claim it back through tax or something so why not? I put mine on my expenses and it goes through the books.

As a last resort if you have to pay your own membership there is also the possibility of obtaining tax relief on payments subject to certain conditions see the following HMRC link. It Also depends if IOSH is on the HMRC approved list. Not sure if they are or not http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/incometax/relief-subs.htm

IOSH is on the approved list for tax relief. I have to pay my own membership so claim tax relief on it. Julie
