We have been presented with a situation whereby some of our fire extinguishers have been condemned at their annual service as the printed instructions on them have become illegible in places. The service engineer has confirmed that this is the only reason why they have been condemned. Can anyone tell me if you can get extinguishers refurbished in such circumstances instead of having to purchase new ones?

I will make this enquiry from my current suppliers but I want another opinion to ensure that they aren't just pushing me to purchase new ones.

Printed instructions ?

Would a new stick on label suffice ?

You can always get a second opinion from a different service company ?

Fire extinguisher service people have sales targets. Always bear this in mind when faced with a potential bill for replacements.

How old are these extinguishers? Any thing older than 20 years will require replacing. I found this document quite helpful.

David that is the exact reason why I am asking if there is an alternative.

Animax - The link you provide mentions BS5306 as stating the extinguishers need replacing every 20 years and I was wondering if you were able to more specific about which section of BS5306 states this as I have looked at BS5306-3 which cover the maintenance of extinguishers and can see no reference to this?

CO2 exys pressure test after the first ten years then every five years. If it fails the pressure test then replace it.

No limit otherwise.

Water exys annual open up and look inside, if signs of rust replace otherwise do the same in another year's time.

If exys have riveted body then don't bother examining just replace.

I don't trust servicing engineers as I once attended a Training course and learned a few trade secrets.
