looking for some advice please, I work at present as a paramedic and I want to move into h&s full time.
the problem I have is trying to prove my experience in a new profession, my experience is based initially as a h&s rep working my way up to corporate level a short part time basis h&s officer in the exhibition industry and a short 1 month secondment into a safety and risk department auditing.
my qualifications are tuc nvq level 3 occupational health diploma recognised by iosh at tech level I have just completed ngc1(pass) and will sit ncc1 and ncc2 in December hopefully giving me a cert in construction. (I took the nebosh cert as I recognised without this most employers would not have heard of my nvq qualification even though I believe it is at the same level as the nebosh) .
so my question is two fold would a company take someone on like me with the limited experience I have ?
and secondly are their any routes into unpaid work to gain that much needed experience I need to impress a potential employer.

Biggaz,
I have been working in Health and Safety full time for 2 months. I have a degree, NEBOSH general and fire safety certificate, IOSH managing safely, manual handling instructor training and a degree, so I am not afraid of heard work, but 68 out of 70 job applications turned be down for having little experience. I then applied for two jobs on the same day, got interviews for both and got offered both, it is a case of plugging away and having some faith. As others will mention, go round your local area and ask around for some experience, charities are often quite fond of this. Or in your current position try and integrate health and safety into it and explain it on your cv/application form. I know its extra work but ask your boss if you can be of some help. I was working as a cleaner after uni because I was struggling to get into the profession I wanted, and started getting involved in coshh and methods of work statements, and now I'm in a job that is going to give me a much needed boost and experience to get other jobs when my contract here ends.
Good luck!

Hi Jodie thanks for replying , I had an interview recently and had good feed back came 4th out of 25 so I was quite pleased with that apart from not getting the job lol. I guess your right it's a matter of plugging away but the employer above did mention my lack of up to date day to day experience so was wondering if this community had any health and safety professionals that offer unpaid work experience etc etc? But thanks again Jodie that is good advice best of luck with your new career.
