This has cropped up in a meeting this morning: Does anybody provide eyesight test for drivers (not HGV or LGV) for driving for work? Does anybody supply spectacles for people who drive for work?

We don't, and we have blue-light and off-road vehicles. We are intending to ask older drivers to declare any eyesight problems (new employees do that before driving) every few years, but I guess what I think is that almost nobody drives only for work, and it's a condition of their licence for their own private driving as well as for work that their eyesight meets highway code standards, so it's not up to the employer to provide tests or glasses; it's a Road Traffic Acts requirement, not HASAWA, John

In the past when I worked for a large Blue Chip company, we had "drivers medicals" for everyone who drove company vehicles, not just LGV drivers. This applied to FLT, van and car drivers. One of the criteria was an eyesight test. Bear in mind though that we had in house occy health so it was doable - not always possible in smaller organisations. We did not pay for their glasses, since theywould need them anyway.

A I must agree with JWK. There will be people that supply eye tests and glasses for driving at work but I doubt if there is a law or regulation that says you have to. No can see no can drive. If you hired a person to drive put them through a driving test and they only ever drove for you may be a different scenario but I doubt if this exists.

Agree with JWK. We make reference to it in our drivers' policy under the section of staff ensuring they are fit to drive, statement cut & pasted below: "Staff must ensure they are fit to drive and will be expected to undergo regular eye exams to ensure that their eyesight meets the minimum legal requirements for driving and, if appropriate, wear corrective glasses or lenses when driving. Current recommendation for frequency of eyesight testing is every two years and these exams are free in Scotland." Sam

We conduct eyesight tests for all employees as part of our health surveillance programme but do not pay for glasses.

We frequently do spot checks using old number plates that we hang up on the office wall 20 metres away.
