Good afternoon fire experts.
Does Intumescent Paint work - I have seen the claims on various web sites which claim that doors would be compliant to BS standard - is this true?
I presume this is a cheap solution instead of replacing with proper fire doors.

Hi Rich,
It does offer protection and can be certified to offer 30 minutes depending on the surface (door) it has been applied to. Provided that it is applied correctly and with the correct number of coats. The issue with using intumescent paint is the deterioration over time. The surface is only certified to offer protection when initially painted so the condition of the surface will ultimately determine levels of protection. I have used this in the past and it has satisified fire safety engineers and fire officers from local authorities.
the certification that I mention is issued by the company applying the product.

Yes
It works and can be used as "supplemental lighting" or part of a "wayfinding system". Would need to comply with BS5266-6 "Emergency Lighting. Code of Practice for non-electrical low mounted way guidance systems for emergency use. Photoluminescent systems.

A fire door is a piece of Passive Fire Safety Equipment, unfortunately there is no cheap fix solution ;-)
I take it the existing doors were fire doors origionally (although to an old standard), as by applying intumescent paint alone doesnt make it a fire door.
If you believe that the fire doors are no longer suitable, then replacement are probably required. As painting in intumescedent paint alone may not bring it to the required standard. As other things such as hinges, intumescent seals, cold smoke seals and glazing should also be considered.
