Hi there

I have recently passed the NEBOSH National General Certificate and am deciding on my next course.

Can anyone help me with any advice on whether the NEBOSH diploma or NVQ5 is regarded as 'better' and how have you found the courses?

I feel that the NVQ5 would suit me better but just want to make sure that I am making the right decision.

Thanks

Dave

Hi Dave

Not being flippant but do a search as this topic has been covered many, many times and no definite answer given.

I did both at the same time but preferred the more "technical" aspect of the Diploma and it stretched me a lot more.

The NVQ didn't stretch me that much as I was in a H&S Management position at the time and had most of the evidence completed before starting the NVQ so it was mainly an evidence gathering exercise for me with less work required than the Diploma.

What suits one person will not suit another.

Regards

There's alot that needs to be taken into account when making decisions like this, which I too am going through at present. I'm in an FTC job at the minute, so have no chance of getting day release for the diploma even if I pay for the course myself, and depending on my time in this position, I may have left the comany before I finish, and if I don't have another job to go into I could be stuck. You need to consider financials as well if you are self funding, family commitments and how you learn best. Luckily I've gone through uni for a criminology degree but also did an nvq in my last job. I would do a bit of reserach and speak to NEBOSH about both and see what they suggest- no harm in asking at the end of the day- they want you to succeed as much as you do- it looks good on them at the end of the day as well as you.

I hope you succeed in whatever you decide to do

I have completed the NEBOSH General and Construction, I paid for these myself and did them in night school not to affect my current job. I am coming to the end of the NVQ 5 and I have really enjoyed it, the main reason I did this instead of the NEBOSH deploma was time class rooms, studying and exams, there are no exams in the NVQ (I hate exams).

There are jobs advertised which suggest a NEBOSH Diploma or equivilant, which would be the NVQ V, if you look on the internet it does suggest this.

Dave,

I have just completed the NVQ route and qualified. As has been previously mentioned on several occasions on this topic it really is dependant on your learning style.
If you are in a position that will allow you to go and do the NEBOSH route and are comfortable with exams then fine. If not and you are in a position of H&S in your day to day role and dont like exams then the NVQ route is ideal.
Pretty much a no brainer really as you will have all the information at your fingertips to supply as evidence and it is more knowledge based and gives you a broader spectrum, where I have found that the NEBOSH route is very specific.

I hope this helps you find a solution and if you need any help or support please do get in touch.

good luck,

Paul

For the success of any organization, there are multiple factors which are responsible for its growth and survival, among which safety measures of the workers play a vital role and hold an utmost position in the success of an organization. The reason or the motive of NEBOSH National General Certificate courses is to guide the employees to tackle the tough situation and handle them with ease and patience.

Hi

This subject has been discussed many many times on this forum.
Bottom line:- NVQ 5 if you work in a H&S role, its easier to build up evidence for your modules because its vocational - Nebosh Dip if you academically minded and don't mind the exam route.

What would I like to see on a CV :- Nebosh-Dip CMIOSH.

I am not in any way saying one is better than the other, just merely stating my observations from a cross section of H&S job advertisement requirements.

You pays your money and takes your choice.

Good luck

As stated been done a 1000 times - read up on both - make your choice.

What I like to see on a CV is a match to the Job spec I've issued supported with a Level 6 qualification.

Of the many staff I have employed not once as their qualification route been a priority to me - I want somebody who can do the job with experience. There are many more important factors in recruiting the right person than how they arrived at CMIOSH.
