Not sure if I am just having a bad day and unnecessarily confusing myself however according to DSEAR areas that are zoned as a Zone 2 should have Category 3 equipment installed. Is there anywhere I can find out the definition of Category 3 equipment, the ACOP doesn't say. Is Category 3 equipment the same that would be fitted in a zone/area that is regarded as being non-hazardous or is it different in some way(?) and would a typical school science lab or Design Technology workshop that has welding gear in it be classed as a Zone 2 area. I keep reading the ACOP and tying myself up in knots. Some clarity would be most welcome!

Cat 3 Equipment must be safe under normal operations
See Baseefa website for more info.
There is a nice free poster to download, summarising ATEX definitions etc

Chas, Cat 3 is considered normal equipment: "Equipment in this category is intended for use in areas in which explosive atmospheres caused by gases, vapors, mists or air/dust mixtures are unlikely to occur or, if they do occur, are likely to do so only infrequently and for a short period only." This judgement will come from you risk assessment. http://www.techintl.com/atex.cfmHope this helps Matt
