Can anyone recommend any equipment suitable for the occasional testing of noise in a workshop environment? As it would be more for spot checking of any specific complaints or of older equipment, then a reasonably priced product for occasional use would be best. Thanks

All depends on how much you want to spend unfortunately.

if its just for monitoring I like this little device, Noise monitor

This little device would identify a problem area, and you could hire a calibrated meter if needed.

Would an app do as an initial screen?

Not calibrated - but my phone (A fruit based product that defeated Snow White - but is being upgrade very soon to a non fruit based product thank goodness!!) is accurate to about 2 - 3dB against our calibrated metre... OK, OK I know 3dB is double the sound intensity - but it's often more than enough for what I initially need.

Don't forget - any purchased metre will also need calibrating - which has a cost too!
