Hi does anyone know whether the weekly evaporation test is a legal requirement or just a best practice when dealing with steam boilers?

I'd never heard of such a thing, but then I work with the old-fashioned rail-going type of boiler!
This page http://www.spiraxsarco.c...-in-the-boiler-house.asp says that:

"The following test routines are required by the UK HSE (Health and Safety Executive) for a manned boiler house."

The test described consists of letting the water level drop by using steam until a low water alarm is activated. Whether it is actually a legal requirement I don't know.
