If you scroll down to 10:07am in the live feed you will see where the BBC's Nick Robinson was as he covered Obama's visit to a Newport school this morning.

Knowing the BBC are normally pretty hot at carrying out risk assessments, I wunder how this activity was covered ?

It all goes out the window when you need a place to report from. Incidentally, I wonder what the home owner charged the BBC for use of their flat roof - what would you charge?

Answer the last part from tomorrow so the mods don't get upset

The way the Beeb do Health and Safety is a bit hit and miss I think. When they came to visit us to do a well-known gardening programme I had to fill a long ‘risk assessment’ form before they’d come on site. My own ‘risk assessment’ for the same thing was about half as long but I think more to the point. This morning I saw a piece on the TV news and the reported said ‘I have to wear all of this gear as I am on a building site’ ie hi-viz hard hat etc. He was standing in the middle of a field with nothing overhead and no plant or anything like that about.
Last night I saw Michael Portillo sitting in a university lab with loads of chemicals about discussing genetic fingerprinting. He was wearing his suit and tie as was his host. No labcoat or safety specs( lucky he was not in one of my labs).

I got to have a look around the BBCs temporary Olympic TV studio on top of a council tower block in eat London. Part of it was an abandoned flat and part was a scaffolding type studio similar to what they erect outside Parliament on special occasions.

From a fire - and in particular a means of escape point of view - it was poor to the point (IMHO) where a LA fire safety inspector would have almost certainly considered a prohibition notice - if it had not been such a high profile building!

Imagine shutting down the BBC's Olympic coverage 24hrs prior to the opening ceremony? That would have been interesting!!

The BBC has a 100% record as far as I am concerned - 100% of poor management of H&S - I have worked on a number of high profile BBC projects and not one of them would pass a suitable and sufficient test - but 'hey ho' who really cares?!

Every episode of Coast on BBC will see at least one reporter or interviewee with a brand new Lifejacket on, on no crutch straps!!!
