I'm drafting out a script for an induction video and wondering if anyone else has undertaken similar project and has anything they'd care to share. Andrew Andrew Böber MSc CMIOSH FRSPH FRGS

Andrew, A couple of points for you; Keep the details of which regulation etc to the minimum you can possibly get away with, very few people really need to know the ins and outs of every regulation that may apply - focus on the safety outcomes you require, the hazards involved and then the rules..... Also, get someone who is not a safety professional and preferably nothing to do with the business to read the script to see if it actually makes sense to a lay person Hope that helps, Jim

I agree with Jim, I haven't done a script for an induction but I produced a Fire Safety talk for my previous manager, she wanted each law and reg under the sun, and I had to tell her most people don't really care about that side of things too much, they want to know what is affecting them directly- which is the hazards, controls and rules specific to your situation. Also, if this is for new starters- they are going to be daunted anyway with everything so you don't want to put too much on them in one go.

The script will depend upon the target audience and would include key site rules/requirements including emergency arrangements such as fire/other alarms and evacuations, first-aiders & facilities etc.. For the key site rules/requirements, try to keep it as simple as possible, but that will depend to a large extent on what rules you want to convey. We also have a simple quiz, the aim of which is not primarily to test the understanding, but a good way ensuring that the viewer to concentrates on the presentation. We have just compiled one using a professional outfit and is currently being edited. Pls feel free to PM me for more details.

Who is the induction for? We have a number of induction powerpoint presentations. 1. New starters induction 2. Visitor induction 3. Contractor induction And we use three way communication (Q & A's). Could send you one, msg me your e-mail if interested.

If this is dynamic workplace (i.e. construction site) I would refrain from including any details that can change easily i.e. names, emergency arrangements, H&S rules and I would supplemented it by couple slides. Regards,

Avoid complicated sentences. How you would a write letter and how you write what you would say are completely different. Try watching a documentary with your eyes closed and notice how slow and how exagerated the inclination of speach is compared to normal conversation. When I'm writing I put comma's in when they should be there for grammatical reasons and double forward slashes for breaths or pauses for impact. eg; "Of those fatalities, // only a quarter were caused by burns alone. // The largest cause of death in a fire is being overcome by gas, // smoke // or toxic fumes."
