Hi all I recently finished my Nebosh diploma and am looking at options for personnel development. If you have a NEBOSH diploma would you be still expected to under go confined space training? Or asbestos awareness etc. i have a teaching qualification and am wondering if I should be teaching these subjects not sitting in more training. I am just wanting to know what other Nebosh diploma holders do for training and development.

Hi, I would say the Diploma is a generalist qualification that ensures the underpinning knowledge is covered across the H&S spectrum. For more specialised or technical work then these courses and training opportunities are in fact essential. For example, although I too hold the diploma, it wasn't until I did a managing confined spaces course with my engineers that I actually got to wear the kit, see the operators issues etc. I will sit in on any training with an H&S aspect to get a sense of what it is all about and also to see what my guys want. Externally, then for development there are all sorts of things beyond just courses - I even sat in on an IOSH Working Safely course recently, did the tests and everything and learned some stuff which was then logged in my CPD / IPD Hope this helps, Jim

I go for whatever training is available- though much of it is self funded. I have just started the diploma but I assume like the general certificate it covers all bases- jack of all trades as it were- you can't specialise in everything I guess. I would like to do a conversion course to get a fire safety manager's certificate to get a more in depth knowledge of that aspect- after already completing the Fire safety certificate last year. I would go on the training like ExDeeps mentioned and get a feel for what is really going on- you can then adapt your teaching to suit the situation.
Good Luck!
