My boss is wishing to appoint someone as a CDM and the has been told he can use an internal member of staff with no formal qualifications but is classing them as competant because of his background in warehousing.


Does this wash ? It will go over the 30 days and 500 man hours.

Personally I dont believe this classess as competant. Do they need to have training in this area or qualifications?

RE: Competence - this is (and forgive me if the wording is not exact but the sentiment is right!) someone who has the relevant knowledge and experience or qualification to carry out the task.

Simply working in a warehouse, to my mind, would not competence. To be a CDM co-ordinator I would be looking at Health and Safety experience, experience managing a project, facilitating communication -that sort of thing. It's worth looking at the duties of the CDM coordinator and seeing how experience may link in to these (in the absence of qualifications!). Link below:

A background in warehousing does not make someone competent to be a CDM-C, even if the project in question is related to warehousing.

I personally wouldn't choose a hospital cleaner to do complex surgery on me, even if they have worked in hospitals longer than the surgeons on offer.
