Hi Learned Friends

Some years ago maybe 10 or so years ago I did a lot of work with a Japanese firm in managing their safety and one issue I addressed was racking and inspections by a competent person and wondered if things are still seen the same way.

The way I always saw it was that SEMA was the main training body and we had certain Managers trained by SEMA for the day to day management and a SEMA inspector completed the yearly inspection as the competent person and to be honest in traveling around with this inspector I realized how much they knew.

Basically....

Is SEMA still seen as the major body ? or do people use other bodies these days ?

Do the HSE mainly recognize SEMA ?

Does anyone use Non SEMA people to inspect their racking ?

I ould really be interested in other safety professional view of the above issue and associated questions.

Alan

Hi Spud,

I'd still consider SEMA to be the industry guideline and personally speaking, I would only use SEMA registered inspectors to carry out the annual thorough inspections due to the complexity of the checks they carry out. In terms of the day-to-day / visual checks I'd say these can be carried out internally with 'minimal' training, the frequency of which would be determined by your risk assessment (ie amount of traffic around the racking) - I've sent you a PM with some info that might be of interest.

Hi

We had our racking inspected last week by a SEMA registered inspector.

During the inspection he showed me what to look for so that I can carry out the monthly racking checks in the future.

He told me that I could go to a day training on the monthly checks but the 5 minute run-through would give me the basics so that's what we decided to do.

If they fail again just google "SHP racking inspections" and several articles appear including these.
