Hi
I've been asked why you should never clip onto an adjacent structure when using a MEWP.
I've looked online for a specific answer to no avail. I'm assuming it's because if the MEWP fails and descends you will be left dangling from the structure. Is this correct?

You could consider this:
The purpose of wearing a lanyard and harness in a MEWP is work restraint not fall arrest. The lanyard should be short enough that the occupant will not be ejected from the basket nor be able to climb out. If the purpose is to keep people in the basket why would you clip on to an adjacent structure?

External work in gusty conditions (but within safety limit for machine) is also an example.
I've stood on a 6 storey roof deck before (guarded) and watched contractors attaching facia panels to a side elevation just below. The lateral movement in the basket was extremely noticeable. The sway was in the region of 100-150cm on a fully extended boom MEWP (cherry picker).
You'd be plain daft to clip on to the building in that scenario.
