In reference to my gym thread what are the views on the following:
The personal trainers have to go through certain levels of training to become a qualified PT. This will obviously include how to lift correctly and the interactions with the spine etc.
So therefore in my opinion they would be competent to train the other staff in the gym on the correct lifting techniques, even though it is not from a h&s perspective.
Thoughts?

To an extent they probably could but I would say that lifting boxes for example is different from lifting a bar bell, dumb bells purely from the position of the body.
From my experience from working as a gym instructor/trainer we never actually covered specific manual handling as such, more this is how you should lift and control the weight being used during the exercise.

What roles do the other staff carry out in the gym? If they are an Instructor but not a Personal Trainer then thy should cover similar stuff within Gym Instruction Course e.g. YMCA! If receptionists etc then would suggest a Manual Handling course from someoe who holds a Train the Trainer course for Manual Handling perhaps? Just my thoughts!

Additionally I would only allow people to train others if they are formally able e.g. they also hold a training certificate etc. to train as just because somebody can do something it does not automatically mean that they can train others to do what they can do etc. - this is a massive problem right through industry/business where people get a piece of paper in a subject and they then automatically go on to train people in that subject where their skill, as already noted, did not cover how to train formally
