A manufacturing company makes a wide range of moulds for their injection moulding machines. They also make straps (metal) that are bolted to the mould and then attached by an eye bolt to a hoist for lifting into and out of the machines. There is some concern that if a strap failed how could the employer demonstrate that the straps are of the right strength / tolerance etc. for the task. They are confident that they are over engineered but cannot specify the tolerances. Any ideas of how to go about this please? Many thanks

It should be part of the design process and specification for both the moulds and lifting strap. You mean it was never considered as part of the design process, how the moulds would be moved, installed etc into the moulding machine....

"Why should we waste time defining requirements? It's more efficient to just get on and make something." "It's for use in-house so it's not design." I hear these sort of statements all the while!

Just get the straps proof load tested as you would any other piece of lifting equipment under LOLER. We design and make our own fixtures in house and then we get the test house to come in and proof load test them and they issue a certificate - job done, easy peasy.

Thanks Hilary /Walker, how would they go about finding a test house?

Just Google "proof load testing" and they should find one easily in their area.
