I have been searching for a definitive answer to this questions and after consulting HSE and DfT legislation I cannot find the answer... Maybe I'm just confusing myself... I work for a fire and security company and our engineers carry out servicing of alarm systems. Occasionally the alarm back up batteries need to be replaced and are transported from the clients premises to our HO for recycling. These batteries are small (approximately 100mm in length) lead acid 12v. I was advised that engineers who carry these batteries should also be carrying a fire extinguisher. However would a battery box of some sort not be a more suitable precaution as I believe there would be more of a risk from leaking battery acid rather than the battery causing a fire. Can anyone point me in the right direction here? Thanks in advance, Iain

Hi Iain, I don't think you will find a definative answer, it's all down to your risk assessment. How many batteries are they likely to be carrying at any one time? If it's a very small amount I would agree that a battery box would probably be sufficient (remembering the battery under the bonnet is considerably larger and there is no requirement to carry an extinguisher because of that one).

A part answer to add to the masses...... From memory - Fire extinguishers are identified somewhere in highway code for cars. They are also mandatory for LGV/HGV with speciifc sizes identified for those carrying dangerous goods in cab and on trailer i.e. under ADR , I think Also check waste regs/authority if you need to register to carry 'redundent batteries' as typically they are waste and likely to be sent somewhere else for recycling A disclaimer answer - what does the HSE and your risk assessment say....
