The process of wastewater treatment involves physical, chemical and biological processes that aim to improve the quality of the wastewater released in the environment. There are three levels of wastewater treatment, namely primary, secondary and advanced. Primary wastewater treatment is designed to separate the solid, suspended and floating objects in the raw sewage. It includes a preliminary process of screening the raw sewage to trap suspended particles as well as sedimentation to remove the solid particles. Secondary wastewater treatment involves biological processes that aim to remove organic matter dissolved in the sewage with the help of microbes that consume it for their own growth. Additional sedimentation process in settling tanks may also be carried out to remove the sludge from the sewage at this stage.
