Help please. Some of my staff us on occasional throughout the day use a abrasive cut off saw to break into tarmac. The M/C uses water as a dust suppressant and the job takes 5 - 10 minutes to complete staff are issued with a disposable face mask in addition as extra protection. With water being used do they need RPE and if they do. Am I correct that they will need a face fit test? Thanks C

Ditto - most definitely YES. Apart from the health issues, about a year ago now one of my clients was issued with an FFI by the HSE for one of his employees not wearing one - spotted by the HSE Official as he was driving past.

If you are using RPE as a control measure in order to comply with a regulation, then face fit testing is required. http://www.hse.gov.uk/fo...s/ocs/200-299/282_28.pdf Sometimes people wear masks as a personal preference or as a "precaution" in which case you don't need face fit testing. For instance, if you were convinced that there was no or virtually no dust, so no RPE was needed, but someone still wanted to wear a mask you would not have to face fit.
