Without my knowledge, my boss has gone and purchased a 2nd hand air compressor which sadly has not come with a written scheme of examination (WSoE). I have advised him that the equipment cannot be used until we have this and have put in place a suitable risk assessment/operating procedure. Everywhere else I have worked have always purchased this type of equipment brand new with the WSoE included in the purchase price and the ongoing examinations carried out by our insurers so I was wondering if anyone could tell me how much I can expect to have to pay to have the WSoE written by a competent person and also what I should be looking for in terms of their competence to do this work and the ongoing regular examinations.

It's not wildly expensive and can be added to your current scheme by the insurers who carry out the checks. Just give them a ring and find out.
