Hello. Could someone help me out, either by sending a link to a good website, or perhaps providing information, on the Steps to implement a Health and Safety Management System, to 18001 accreditation??? And I don't mean 'hire a H&S Consultant', but the actual steps. Will find this massively beneficial to my career. thank you

It may be worth you concentrating your efforts on researching ISO 45001 as this will be replacing OHSAS 18001 next year.

Paul is right altough its likely that 45001 comes in at the end of next year which is literally 2 years away. A long time. In terms of 18001 implementation, and in a very basic sense you need to - Get a copy of the 18001 standard Carry out a gap analysis, to compare what the standard requires and what you currently do. Create actions based on the gap analysis to ensure your management system is in line with the standard requirements. I work for a large company and it took us about 6 months

There is some resources here ( link below bottom right hand side) other certification company's also probably produce helpful info. Getting and reading the standard is the first part. All the elements link together and are not a list of things to do. Ie when it talks about procedures or keeping records you also have to consider the part about document control at the same time. It is best to try and establish what the company already does that meets the wording in each part of the standard. Try not to create too much that is new if you can help it. http://www.bsigroup.com/...ional-health-and-safety/

Hi, We got accredited December 2014 after 8 months preparing our existing system to reflect the clauses of the BS18001 standard. This is what you will be audited against. If you have the Quality standard, ISO 9001-2008 in place your job will be a little easier as both standards are similar in as much as they require internal audits, management reviews, policy docs etc. Your existing H&S culture will be a big factor as one of the main aspects of 18001 is employee involvement and commitment from top level management....both have to be demonstrated during your external audits. Its not difficult to implement, just time consuming making an existing H&S management system fit the clauses of the standard.

I got a copy of ohsas 18001 step by step, its a basic outline of what goes on, perhaps attend a course?- i went on an NQA course with my current employer which was qute good- I have only been working in Health and Safety since May so it was all new to me. We are hoping to gain accreditation across all sites this year.

18002 and 18004 give a bit more guidance and explanation as to how to implement an 18001 compliant system. It is worth having a look at those documents too.

OHSAS 18002:2008 is about:- Occupational health and safety management systems — Guidelines for the implementation of OHSAS 18001:2007. With it, you also get all the clauses of OHSAS 18001.

Get a copy of OHSAS 18002. That is OHSAS 18001 plus guidelines for the implementation of OHSAS 18001. Even though there will be ISO 45001 inlate 2016 or in 2017, you can use OHSAS 18002 as a well written textbook on OH&S management.
