I think we had a question about this some time ago but cannot remember. We have recently changed our Lift Service Contract, the original auto dial was linked to the original service company and will no longer work. The new service contractor claims under Lift Regs that we must have a new one fitted: (4.5) Cars must be fitted with two-way means of communication allowing permanent contact with a rescue service As we rarely use the lift and only during work hours with plenty of people around within shouting distance, a basic RA consideration would be that we don't need an auto dial. I think we have three options: 1. Pay a lot of money for new auto dial or revert to original service contract even though we were unhappy with service. 2. Run with RA of not needing an auto dial, understanding that should we undertake a PEEP that recognises the need we'd reinstate it. 3. Take the lift out of service until/if a PEEP indicates we need it, then reinstate. Note - the Lift was installed before June 2003 when new requirements would have made auto dial compulsory, I believe. Opinions welcome

The term "rescue service" need not mean an external company. In our case, for a large site, all our lift alarms go to our security reception emergency telephone, who in turn will trigger " person" stuck in a lift emergency and our facilities management contractor team, who are trained & competent in lowering the lift etc will affect the rescue. Have you considered the alarm routed to someone in your own organisation?

What lift Regs are being quoted? 4.5 of LOLAR is about strength and stability. Is this a reference to something in a British Standard, which is Good practice but not in itself a legal requirement?

It is a requirement of the The Lifts Regulations 1997, that implements the EU Directive http://www.legislation.g...1997/831/schedule/1/made

These regs are that sort of EU reg that places duties on suppliers not users and if you look at reg 5-"Lifts and safety components placed on the market and put into service before 1st July 1997- These Regulations do not apply to any lift or safety component which is placed on the market and put into service before 1st July 1997. " They might solve your problem and you can enjoy quoting regs back at people
