This is the sort of thing that varies great deal form organisation to organisation, and it is something that only you can decide upon. Issues to look at include:
1. Surprise, unannounced visits v Planned and Announced visit: Are you , trying to catch people out or to see what it really is like or do you book them ahead of time so that people are ready and able to provide some insight into what they actually doing
2. Do you want a ‘native guide ‘to show you around? This depends on how familiar the big boss is with the business at a front line level
3. Do you ask the unions to come along?
4. Do you want the H&S professional to come along?
5. How long are you going to spend in each area? Do you just want to show your face and tell they are ‘Doing really well!’ or ‘God this place is a disgrace!’ or do they want to look at the nitty gritty and ask questions about training, morale, maybe even look at the paperwork.
6. Ultimately what is the purpose of the tour is it to’ find out what is going on’ or ‘rattle a few cage’ or ‘show them we really care’ etc.
7. Who does the follow up? Do you have a follow up?
There more questions to ask but that’s a start.
