Apologies, i am new to the safety world (well trying to break into it at least) so sorry if the answer to my question is obvious.

Basically i am looking to find out whether or not an employer has any legal obligation to protect its employees from the dangers of working with drains. By drains i mean foul which contains human waste as apposed to a rain water systems. Naturally feces poses all kinds of dangers to health but is PPE alone deemed satisfactory when reducing the risk?

Occupation Health advises that a Hep B vaccine is essential for anyone who comes into contact with drainage but i'm just curious as to whether there is a legal requirement for this or as mentioned, if PPE alone is enough?

Thanks,

The short answer to your question is yes...

There are water hygiene courses that must be completed prior to working in this area along with confined space entry etc. Compliance with PPE and hygiene should also be monitored...

These along with HBV vaccine are just some of the controls.
