Can anyone point me to any information where it states how much these areas should be around pieces of machinery?

If you are referring to school workshops have a look at Building Bulletin 81 (available to download from the web). It gives distances for a variety of items of workshop woodworking and metal working machinery and has diagrams to go with them. Hope this helps.

going back a long time we worked to an outstreched arms length distance to any dangerous part that could cause immediate harm- however in them days things were not as guarded as they are now
