Help needed; We currently supply 'over specs' or eye shields to those employees who wear prescription glasses. I have been asked by some employees if they can have prescription safety glasses (PSG) instead as wearing the over specs causes headaches and eyestrain. When approached the managers asked what is the criteria for supplying PSG, based on the overall time per day and the number of times per year. My answer was anybody who has to wear glasses for more than 1 or 2 hours per day, for greater than 50% of their working week have the potential to be affected. They have no problem with supply PSG that meet this criteria, but there are some employees who would only wear them for 8 hours per day for a week, maybe once or twice a year. Would it be reasonable to supply to these employees? Any help or guidance greatly appriciated.

First, your criteria is rather arbitrary and not one that I would agree with. Wearing of overspecs for those who wear prescription glasses can give distortion and in my opinion is only for very short periods, certainly much less than you have declared.
One answer may be to allow those who wear prescription glasses whose attendance is very occasional to wear their own glasses without overglasses. It is not uncommon with some companies to treat prescription glasses as PPE because they do offer some protection to the wearer. I can hear the gasps...
If all else fails you may have to provide PSG to everyone who is likely to attend your premises, costly but as most companies say - safety is there number one priority.
